Carbon black, silica, fillers and process chemicals arrive in sacks and bulk containers and are tipped, screened for tramp metal and moved into storage. Keeping each filler in its own storage route stops cross-contamination between compound recipes.

Fillers, oils and curing chemicals are weighed out against the compound recipe and released into the mixer feed. Recipe control at this point is what makes one batch of compound behave like the last.

Weighed ingredients are fed to the internal mixer, and the discharged compound is sheeted, cooled and stacked before it goes forward. Powder released around the mixer charging hole is captured at source rather than allowed into the hall.

Treads and sidewalls are extruded, fabric and steel cord are rubber-coated on the calender, and the components are assembled into a green tyre on the building drum. Cooled, tension-free component handling between these stations protects the shape of each part.

Green tyres are cured in heated moulds, which the plant supports with steam, hot and chilled water and cooling circuits. Vulcanisation fumes released as presses open are drawn away from the operating floor.

Cured tyres are trimmed, examined for internal and surface defects, marked and stacked for despatch. Rejects are separated on the line so they never reach the loading bay.
