Raw salt arrives carrying sand, clay and other insoluble matter, which is washed out with saturated brine. The washed salt is drained and carried forward for size reduction.

Lumps are broken down and the salt is screened into the crystal sizes used for table, food grade and industrial salt. Oversize goes back to the crusher and the fines are drawn off separately.

Washed salt still holds surface moisture, which is driven off in a hot air dryer before any additive is applied. The salt is cooled after drying so that moisture does not settle back into the crystal bed.

Iodine solution and free flow or anti caking agents are dosed onto the dried salt and worked through the bed. Iodine is dosed steadily and worked through the whole batch rather than added at one point in the bed.

Treated salt is held in silos and given a final screen before packing to remove lumps formed in storage. Salt draws moisture from the air, so storage and transfer are kept enclosed.

Salt is filled into consumer pouches, jars or bulk sacks, then weighed, sealed and stitched or coded as the pack calls for. Retail packs are check weighed and inspected before they go into cartons.
