Baled or bagged tobacco leaf is opened and fed to the line, and stones, metal and loose trash are taken out before cutting. Stems are separated so that only the lamina goes forward to the cutter.

The cleaned leaf is cut into fine strands, which is the form hookah tobacco is sold in. Oversize pieces are returned for re-cutting through the sifter.

Many hookah blends are made from washed leaf, so the cut tobacco is rinsed and then brought back to working moisture. Steam and jacketed vessels are used to condition the leaf before it meets the syrup.

Molasses, glycerine and flavouring are prepared as a syrup and then mixed through the cut leaf until the strands are evenly coated. Mixing continues until colour and moisture read the same across the batch.

The blended tobacco is held so the syrup soaks right through the strands before packing. Batches move in bins and trolleys, and are kept cool where the recipe calls for it.

Matured product is filled into tins, jars or pouches, sealed and coded. Sealed units are collated into cartons for despatch.
