Foundries melt iron, steel and non-ferrous metal and pour it into sand or shell moulds to produce castings. A foundry runs charge preparation, melting, sand mixing, pouring, knockout and sand reclamation, and each of those stages releases heat, fume or silica dust.
Complete Foundries Process Flow
Scrap, pig iron, foundry returns and alloy additions are sorted, weighed and made up into a charge. Mixed incoming scrap is separated and non-metallic material is taken out before the charge goes to the furnace.
The charge is melted in a cupola, induction or arc furnace and the melt is held ready for pouring. Furnace gases and metallic fume are hooded at the furnace mouth and cleaned before discharge.
Silica sand, bentonite, coal dust and water are mixed into moulding sand and delivered to the moulding line. Sand is screened and stored so the moulding stations draw from a consistent mix.
Molten metal is poured into the moulds and the poured moulds travel along the line while the castings solidify. Heat coming off the cooling line is drawn away from the working area.
Moulds are broken out on a shakeout, the castings are separated and the used sand drops away. Recovered sand is cleaned of fines and lumps and returned to the sand plant for reuse.
Shakeout, sand handling and fettling areas are ducted into a common collection system. Shop floor air is changed through general ventilation alongside the source capture points.
