Book manufacturing turns printed sheets into bound volumes by folding them into sections, gathering the sections in order, sewing or gluing the spine, and trimming the block on three sides.
Complete Book Process Flow
Printed sheets are moved from the press hall to the folders and folded down into sections. Stacks are transferred between floors and machines on handling equipment rather than carried.
Folded sections are gathered in page order and joined at the spine by sewing, wire stitching or adhesive binding. Gathered blocks move between the binding stations on linked conveying.
The bound block is trimmed at head, foot and fore-edge to the finished size. The knives throw off shavings and fine paper dust, which are drawn away from the trimmer and separated before collection.
Finished books are checked, counted into pack quantities and shrink wrapped. Packs are coded so each batch can be traced back to the run.
Wrapped packs are collated into cartons, palletised and wrapped for the warehouse or the distributor.
Trim shavings and spoiled sections collected from the extraction system are broken down and baled for recycling.
