Barley is tipped into a receiving hopper, fed forward at a steady rate and cleaned of straw, awns, chaff and dust on screens and aspiration. Magnetic separation removes ferrous material carried in from the field.

Grain is graded into size fractions and de-stoned, since both pearling and malting are carried out on an even kernel. Thin and broken corns are separated out for feed.

Abrasive pearling removes the husk and successive bran layers from the kernel to give pot barley and pearl barley. The bran dust released is captured at the machine.

Malting is a separate route rather than a stage after pearling: cleaned, graded barley is steeped in water, allowed to germinate in a conditioned bed, and then kilned dry. Conditioned, cooled air is passed through the germination bed to hold it steady.

Pearled barley is steamed and rolled into flakes, or milled and sifted into barley flour and grits.

Pearl barley, flakes and flour are weighed and filled into bags or sacks, stitched, coded and checked.
